To Chia or Not To Chia...That's the question! Posted on 31 Aug 20:20 , 0 comments

I don't know about you but I am obsessed with Mama Chia. I LOVE it! It's a fruit drink with chia seeds and it is delicious.. It's weird at first, then pretty soon you'll love chewing on the little seeds!

First of all Chia is so good for you. It's loaded in anti-oxidants, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and protein. It has tons of fiber. It REALLY aids in digestion (if you get my drift.)  It is high in Omega 3's and it helps lower blood pressure. It keeps your stomach full.  All things we want and need, right?

Well here is the rub. One bottle of Mama Chia is $3.50! That is so expensive and I try to drink one every day. I don't know how it is at your house but my husband wants to do every thing I do. Monkey see, monkey do. So double that!

$3.50 X 7= $24.50 per week. Total $1,275 a year X 2 (husband) = $2,548.00

So, you know me, I decided to try and make my own.

Here's what's in Mama Chia. It's organic. 14 grams of sugar, not too bad.

So, I got some Chia Seeds, some grape juice and a 16 oz. jar.

I added 3 Tablespoons of Chia to 1 cup of warm water. Then let it sit  for about an hour and do it's thing.

Next I added 1 cup of grape juice to the mixture. Took a drink and it was delicious!

Super simple, right? Hmmmm...It was too good. I wondered how much sugar was in that mixture I made. I looked at the grape juice container and almost fainted!

One cup of grape juice has 39 grams of sugar! Holy crap, this is not what I was going for. Back to the drawing board!

So, I made more chia mixture, let it sit. This time decided to make a lemonade/tea mixture for my flavor and add two teaspoons of honey for sweetness. This has a little caffeine for energy boost. You can use herbal tea if you're sensitive to caffeine.

Definitely not as sweet as Mama Chia, but not bad! More of a Chia Tea. This will totally work for me.

So let's do the math: 1 lb. Chia= $9.00 =48 Tablespoons. We use 3 Tablespoons so it's 18.5 cents a Tablespoon. Box of Lemonade Tea is $5.00 = 40 bags = 13 cents a bag. Teaspoon of honey 15 cents.

Chia -57 cents

Tea Bag- 13 cents

2 Teaspoons of Honey- 30 cents

Total $1.00 for 16 oz. of homemade Chia Drink. And that's two servings. So total is 50 cents!

Total savings: $24.50-3.50= $21.00 per week. That's $1,092 a year X 2 (husband) $2,184.00.

Plus it has only 10 grams of sugar (16 oz.) vs 14 grams (10 oz.)  Which in my opinion is always better. Also you can re-use your jar so there is no trash!

I'm going to keep trying to improve the flavor of my home made Chia drink. And maybe once in a while I'll treat my self to a Mama Chia. I'll keep you posted.

p.s. I'm still in shock at how much sugar grape juice has in it!
