Watermelon 101 Posted on 13 Aug 17:02 , 1 comment
We eat a lot of watermelon at my house. I mean a lot. We go through at least 2-3 watermelons a week. We eat it every day, all summer long. There is nothing better than ice cold watermelon when it's hot. And where I live it's hot in the summer. I always serve it at my parties, my chickens love it. It's just so darn delicious!! When I go to Costco I always buy at least 4 watermelons, so I am sure to have plenty on hand until my next trip!
My trick for picking a good watermelon, is that I always pick the ugliest ones in the batch. The bee stings mean it's sweet, the brown webbing means it's sweet. My trick seems to work out great for me. Out of 30 watermelons this summer only 2 were bad and that's because someone bought them for me. So going forward, I will always pick my own watermelons. Picking a good watermelon is a big deal in my family. I always call my mom and dad and kids to tell them what a good watermelon I got! We are watermelon obsessed!!
I don't like to eat it in big slices, I like to eat my watermelon cut up in a bowl with a fork. My friend Addie came to my house last year and I was serving watermelon and she watched me cut one and said she had never seen someone cut a watermelon like I did. So I thought it was a good idea for a blog post. So here I go.
You need a big bowl, a sharp knife (I use a Ginsu Knife it works perfectly) and a cutting board.
Get your watermelon, wash and cut in half. I always taste the middle to be sure it's sweet. I only do 1/2 at a time. I cover and put the other half in the fridge until I need it.
Next put half watermelon face down on cutting board over the sink, with a bowl on the side to catch the rinds. Cut the rind off with a sharp knife.
Should look like this when you're done.
I give the rinds to my chickens, they LOVE watermelon.
After the rind is all cut off, cut in half. Then slice the rest of that half.
Then take that half and put it on it's side. Then slice going the opposite direction.
Turn and slice, so now it's in little chunks. Scoot into bowl as you cut.
Now do your other piece. You're done! Super easy clean up. Now go get a yourself a bowl of watermelon. Ummm it's delicious!
p.s. if you want to try something really good, add a little salt and lemon juice. Trust me it does not disappoint!!
